TOP 10 to do in the Western Algarve

TOP 10 things to do while you are in the Western Algarve!

1. Grotto tour
If this is your first visit to Lagos, you simply must take a "grotto tour". Step into a small fishing boat, let your local fisherman be your guide, and witness from the water, the distinctive and magnificent cliffs that surround the Lagos area. Your guide will navigate around and under the intriguing rock formations, take you into caves and point out the many secluded beaches that surround the town. It is truly a fantastic adventure.

2. Sagres and the Cabo Sao Vicente
Here they say “The end of the world”- it is the most southwesterly point of Europe! An impressive example of the beauty of nature. High up on the stormy water, up to 70 meters high cliffs perched a white lighthouse, which serves the navigators to the orientation as hundreds of years ago. The Cabo de São Vicente is totally worth seeing!

3. Silves
It is a small historic town. The two most conspicuous buildings of the city are the castle of red sandstone and the red and white cathedral next to it. The Romans possessed in Silves a secure settlement, but it was the Arabs who made a beautiful city out of it. However, Silves is worth seeing even without cultural interest, because it is just amazing with its overgrown places, small shops and restaurants. It's worth a stroll in any case!

4. Eat a cataplana
The cataplanas is a Portuguese national dish. It is kind of stew - containing onions, tomatoes, potatoes and pieces of sausage, fish, shellfish or meat. In Portugal, this delicious stew is authentically cooked and served in a cataplana (hence the name). This is a very tight-closing flat pan made of copper or recently stainless steel which looks like a UFO.

5. Watch dolphins in the nature
To see the dolphins in the wild-this is truly a special experience! Different providers offer this possibility. Not far from the coast you will see this beautiful mammals!

A countryside with wooded hills, fragrant orchards and natural springs, here you can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of a rural Algarve! When you reach the top- you are on the highest point of the Algarve Foia de Monchique (902m). Here you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the south coast that stretches up to Sagres.

7. Walking on top of the coast
Explore the beautiful coastline by foot. On these coastal paths it goes uphill and downhill always easy-always along the picturesque craggy coast. Many wildflowers, even orchidees, fig trees, and more along the way.

8 Have a walk on the boardwalks of Alvor
The specially fortified wooden paths created for hiking that traverse the dunes, you should really explore. The view of the sea will always accompany you. Have some grilled sardines in one of the typical restaurants in Alvor after your walk-that’s a perfect day in alvor.

9 Have a swim at the Dona Ana beach
The Praia de Dona Ana, which is protected between the cliffs and lapped by a crystal clear, calm sea, is one of the most famous beaches in the Algarve. The bizarre rock formations that rise out of the sea and spread on the sand beach, donate a little shade and provide a picturesque backdrop.

10. Drink a coffee with the locals
The Portuguese love coffee and are the absolute world champion in drinking coffee outside their own home. To meet for a cup of coffee two or three times a day- thats the lifestyle of the Lusitanians. They prefer to go into a local café, where you can meet friends and neighbors to have a chat and exchange news. Visit one of the many cafés and you will feel this special atmosphere!
