Markets in the Algarve
Experience the real Algarve while purchasing in the market halls and the surrounding weekly markets! This market halls are in almost every village along the Algarve.
The portugues name for this market halls is “Mercados Municipais".
The two most architecturally interesting ones are located in Olhão and in Loule!
The best place to go to if you want to learn more about the culture and people is a local market. Detect the richness of the regional goods, listen to bargaining locals and get an idea how hard people have to work for their daily income.
Many stands inside the "municipal market" halls are opened daily! On the weekends farmers from the region and even from Alentejo are offering their local products: fruits, vegetables, cheese, ham and sausages, olives and many more specialties.
The best time of the day to buy fresh fish and seafood is in the early morning after the municipal markets have opened their doors. Before Sundays and bank holidays you will find the largest selection!
Another attraction for tourists are also the gypsy markets. These take place only on certain days of the week. Hawkers (usually Gypsies) offering all kinds of textiles, household stuff, shoes, bags, ceramics, music cassettes, etc. In short: you can buy almost anything on a gypsy market.
