Figs time in the Algarve

It is figs time in the Algarve!

In the mediterranean region as well as in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, you will see fig trees almost everywhere. Figs, fresh or dried are a special, healthy treat!

Figs are traditionally grown in the Algarve. There are figs, which are better suited for fresh consumption and then there are figs which are better dried and stored. Fig jam is a product of fresh figs- which is delicious. Dried figs are often used for cereal or in cakes. Even coated with chocolate they are a delight.
Traditionally, figs are also used for Queijo de Figo (fig cheese). The Queijo de Figo has nothing to do with cheese. Only the round shape, in which it is usually offered. It is a special sweet dish made of figs, almonds, sugar. A great souvenir for to take home!

And the best: Figs are healthy!
In addition to proteins, low fat, carbohydrate and fiber, figs have a lot of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron , zinc and vitamin B1. In addition, they possess killing digestive enzymes and bacteria substances.
One fig has only about 10 calories. Who nibbles figs, knows the satiating effect . They are stress reducing (because of the magnesium) and they strengthen the heart and circulation.
And if you prefre to drink figs: There is also figs liquor. It’s called  „ Arguardente de figo ".

Enjoy this delicacy!
